A universal feature of the insect body pattern is its segmental (metameric) organization (for review, see Lawrence 1981). The Drosophila embryo has three thoracic (T1–T3) segments and eight abdominal (A1–A8) segments that, although homologous, show distinct segment-specific cuticular patterns (Fig. 1a).
