Abstract

Abstract The formal solutions are presented for the scattered field resulting from either a fluid-coupled, or end-fire acoustic wave travelling over a half-plane plate and impinging on the join with another co-planar plate of different thickness. Three types of joint are considered, namely, the ‘free-free’ joint, the hinge and the welded joint. It is demonstrated that the nature of the scattered fields is sensitive both to the manner in which the plates are joined and the thickness of the two plates.
