Abstract

The hospital was "invented" in the fourth-century Byzantine Empire as a charitable institution for the overnight relief of the poor and sick but not necessarily for medical treatment. It spread around the Mediterranean and the Middle East during the early Middle Ages. It had forerunners in the pagan Roman world and analogues in Jewish and Buddhist traditions but was essentially a new development.
