Abstract

The effects of PbO or PbF 2 additions on the density, thermal‐expansion behavior, and chemical durability of stannous fluorophosphate glasses have been determined. Lead compounds dramatically improve the chemical durability of these glasses in water, resulting in low‐melting‐temperature glasses (T g <150°C) which have durabilities approaching those of commercial soda–lime–silica glasses. Possible causes of these effects are discussed.
