A non-C3v tripod ligand with mixed arms, namely, 2-quinolyl-2,2′-[3,3′-dimethyl-4,4′-diethyl-5,5′-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)]dipyrrolylmethane (LH2), supports a triangular mixed-valent [Cu3]4+ cluster with Cu−Cu distances of about 2.6 Å (see picture). The CuII center of the complex [Cu3L2] exchanges rapidly between two sites at room temperature, giving rise to a seven-line ESR spectrum.
