Abstract In 8 1,4‐bis‐[4‐n‐hexylbenzoyloxy]‐2‐subst.‐benzenes and one analogous hexylcyclohexanoyloxy compound the clearing temperatures, enthalpies, entropies, volumina and order parameters are considered with respect to the molecular structure and compared with predictions of molecular statistical theories. The results are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions and show the predominant role of the steric repulsive forces in stabilizing the nematic state.
