Abstract In a recent theoretical work by the authors, a new theoretical approach to the cut-pile carpet compression based on elastic stored energy was developed. In this study, cut-pile compression behavior was experimentally investigated and the proposed theoretical model verified. Cut-pile carpet samples with three types of pile yarns and five pile density levels were produced and their compression behavior was tested under a constant compressive stress. Then the total energy of pile deformation was calculated and analyzed. Predicted results based on the presented theory show a fairly good agreement with experimental results.
