The variation with particle size of the luminescence efficiency of LiF exposed to monochromatic X-rays and γ-rays has been studied. The efficiency has been found to decrease considerably with particle size, and the magnitude of the effect depends on the photon energy. The effect could, among other factors, be due to an ` inactive ' surface layer.
