Synopsis Forage yield was significantly correlated with soil moisture and temperature. The effect of temperature was independent of moisture, high temperature reducing growth regardless of moisture. Flowering habits varied with the type of clover and climatic factors. By the end of August both types had passed their maximum flowering period and peak of forage production, soil temperatures were maximum, and soil moisture critical. These stresses weakened the clover, diseases became prevalent, and many stolons died.
