On Geography and Its History

Abstract

David Stoddart views the evolution of geography from the perspective of the history of ideas and of science. He examines, for example, the impact of Darwin, Lyell and Huxley in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and the more recent effect of Kuhn's theory of scientific revolution. He offers a criticial review of the value of ecosystems, of the ecological approach and of model-building and quantification.
