Lattice dynamics of magnesium oxide

Abstract

Measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering by longitudinal optic phonons in MgO are reported. These results and those previously obtained for other branches are used in an investigation of various lattice dynamical models, including shell and breathing shell models. It is shown that the agreement with the measured data is improved by the inclusion of breathing effects.
