The present paper represents the first effort, in the long history of botanical exploration in the Hawaiian Archipelago, to make a detailed ecological survey of a representative Hawaiian phytogeographic area.Taxonomic lists and descriptions of new species comprise the bulk of the scientific literature dealing with the Hawaiian flora, and in all of this material there is a conspicuous absence of physiographic and ecologic data. The present paper is based upon field observations extending over a residence of nine years on the island of Oahu, of which time four years have been passed in Manoa Valley itself.
