Abstract

High 131I thyroid uptake, low 127I urinary excretion and low PBI levels have been found in goitrous and nongoitrous subjects living in 2 endemic goiter areas of Central and Southern Italy. The iodine content of drinking water was low. After iodine administration the 131I uptake and PBI levels became normal. No significant difference was observed between goitrous and nongoitrous subjects. The data suggest the existence of iodine deficiency in these areas. The KCIO4 and the PTC tests, the thyroxine-binding capacity and the thyroxine-degradation rate were also investigated in some patients.
