Abstract

Pulse radiolysis experiments on acetone solutions have confirmed that G(triplet)= 1.0. In addition the yields G(singlet)= 0.34 and G(free ions)= 1.1 have been evaluated. It has been demonstrated that the electron affinity of acetone is intermediate between those of naphthalene and anthracene. Extinction coefficients of some aromatic hydrocarbon cations have been determined, and it has been shown that inorganic anions, e.g., CNS–, are oxidized by both solvent cations and solvent triplet states. Rate constants for the reaction of acetone triplet with various solutes have been determined by competition studies.
