The synthesis and characterization of the silahydrocarbons, a class of functional fluids with excellent viscosity index and thermal stability characteristics, are presented and discussed. Thermal stability data for the silahydrocarbons at temperatures up to 370°C are compared to other functional fluids. The oxidative stability and lubricity characteristics of silahydrocarbon formulations are discussed.
