Abstract

Measurements of the Doppler broadening of the 511 keV positron annihilation γ-quanta and the electrical resistivity are performed on the metallic glasses Fe80B20, Fe78Mo2B20, and Fe32Ni36Cr14P12B6 (Metglas ® 2605, 2605A, 2826A, respectively), In contrast to previous measurements on other metallic glasses, significant changes in the lineshape parameter are observed due to recrystallization. The close resemblance of the temperature dependence of the Iv parameter for the glassy metals with the one observed for pure metals containing extended types of defects e.g. vacancy clusters, voids etc. suggests the existence of vacancy-type defects in the glassy structure. The assumption that microcrystallite formation or structural relaxation occurs prior to the glass-crystalline transition in Fe32Ni36Cr14P12B6, is supported by the experiments.
