Sons, Slaves, and Freedmen in Roman Commerce.

Abstract

This is a sociolegal study of the role of the Roman familia in legal and commercial transactions in classical times. The Roman family included slaves and freedmen as well as wives, children and relatives and it served as the basis for a considerable type of legal and quasi-legal activities. In this study, socio-economic data shed light on the law and legal rules illuminate aspects of the extended family.
