Abstract Ten rheumatoid and seven nonrheumatoid tissue culture strains of synovial fibroblasts were studied biochemically and by electron microscopy. No obvious differences in the ultrastructure of the rheumatoid and nonrheumatoid cell strains were detected. Acid phosphatase and β‐glucuronidase measurements were similar in the two groups. No morphologic evidence of an infectious agent was found in any of the cell strains. The diverse morphology found in both groups of cells is described.
