Abstract

An experiment on the prevention of hypomagnesaemic tetany by foliar application of calcined magnesite was carried out with the dairy herd of Greenmount Agricultural College. Hypomagnesaemia and tetany were prevented by‘dusting’ pasture with calcined magnesite at the rate of 28 lb per acre just before grazing, whereas hypomagnesaemia and cases of tetany (including one death) occurred when the animals were grazing pasture which had not been dusted.
