Abstract

This book is a collection of papers on slow virus infections with particular reference to those which produce chronic neurological diseases presented at a symposium held under the auspices of the American Society for Microbiology at its annual meeting in May 1966. The book contains six papers immured by a prelude by Dr. Koprowski and a summation by Dr. Brody. The papers include studies on the pathogenesis of chronic neuroviral infections with special reference to fluorescent antibody studies, on visna virus, scrapie agent, and Aleutian disease of mink; on the immunologic mechanisms of slow virus infection; and on the experimental kuru-like syndrome in chimpanzees. All the authors are knowledgeable and have had direct investigative experience in the areas they present. The volume abounds with hypothesis and speculation largely because more work needs to be done in this virologically difficult area before more definite conclusions as to the pathogenesis of
