Analysis of failure of structures is performed, e.g. to prevent similar cases in the future, clarify responsibilities, add to experience, contribute to design theory, etc. The possible advantages of using fault tree analysis as a tool for systematic failure analysis are discussed. Thus the relevant failure modes of a certain case can be described and related to basic events. The failure of the railing of a scaffold, which led to an accident, is discussed as an example of the feasibility of this kind of systematic approach and the application of fuzzy logic to failure analysis.
