In the tradition of<i>The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapeutics</i>, the editors of<i>The Merck Manual of Geriatrics</i>have produced an organized and practical book devoted to the important discipline of geriatric medicine. The first of five sections covers the common problems encountered in the care of elderly persons (eg, confusion, urinary incontinence, and falls). The next section deals with specific approaches to the care of those in older age groups (eg, home health care, rehabilitation, and preventive strategies). In the third section the various organ systems are presented, with emphasis on the changes that occur with aging. The fourth deals with legal, ethical, and social issues. The last section is a helpful reference guide that includes information on laboratory data and assessment instruments. Not only are the main sections well organized, but each of the 104 chapters is well written and can be understood independently. Additionally, the manual
