An injection of 1 ml of a rabbit anti-LH-RH serum at 9 AM on the day of proestrusprevented the usual preovulatory surge of LH andFSH and blocked ovulation in cycling female rats.Injection of 1 ml of normal rabbit serum did notprevent the preovulatory surge of LH and FSH anddid not block ovulation. The results suggest thatantiserum to the LH-RH decapeptide, exogenouslyadministered, neutralized endogenous LH-RH andthereby prevented the preovulatory surge ofgonadotropin release. The LH-RH decapeptide mayrepresent the physiological FSH-RH, as well as theLH-RH, or alternately LH-RH and FSH-RH mayboth possess a common antigenic determinant,Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2, to the anti-LH-RH serumused in this experiment.
