DETECTION RATE OF HISTOLOGICALLY INSIGNIFICANT PROSTATE CANCER WITH SYSTEMATIC SEXTANT BIOPSIES AND FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY

Abstract

Systematic sextant biopsy and fine needle aspiration cytology each diagnose prostate cancer in about 5% of asymptomatic men who have normal digital rectal examination and serum prostate specific antigen less than 4.0 ng./ml. However, many of the cancers thus detected are insignificant and most of the significant cancers are missed. Therefore, routine screening of such patients with sextant biopsy or aspiration cytology does not appear to be justified.
