Abstract

A 25-year-old man with a therapy-resistant pure red cell anemia was treated with azathioprine and went into a remission that lasted even after immunosuppression had been stopped. Electron microscopy indicated destruction of erythropoietic cells in the bone marrow. The possible relationship between hemolytic and aplastic conditions is discussed.
