Pulsed laser and particle beams afford possibilities of generating intense black-body radiation in small cavities of high-Z material. The radiation confinement in the cavity is investigated on the basis of the non-stationary hydrodynamic equations including radiative heat transfer. It is estimated that with a pulse energy of 10 12 erg a temperature of about 5 x 10 6 K may be obtainable.
