Abstract A novel benzofuranoquinol-type fluorescent host which exhibits sensitive color change and fluorescence enhancement behavior upon enclathration of alicyclic amines has been developed. The X-ray crystal structures of the guest-free and morpholine inclusion compounds have been elucidated, on the basis of which the mechanism of the optical sensing is discussed.
