Research results on polymeric donor–acceptor complexes both in the solid state and in solution are summarised. Solid polymeric charge-transfer complexes (crystals, films) are semiconducting materials satisfying the requirements of various branches of science and technology. Study of such complexes in solution reveals several specific features of complex formation in polymer systems and approaches an explanation of the electrophysical characteristics of layers of these complexes in terms of the mechanism of complex formation in solution. A brief account is given of the theory of charge-transfer complexes. Methods for determining and calculating the equilibrium constants of the polymeric complexes are critically examined. A list of 172 references is included.
