Abstract

The biggest obstacles in using UV absorbance data to monitor dissolved organics are the effects of light‐scattering (on unfiltered samples) and the variety of extinction coefficients anticipated from the many possible organic constituents of natural waters. These parameters can be reasonably constant over a limited geographical region and a UV‐visible method for continuous analysis of water is as precise as TOC analyses of filtered water samples.
