Abstract Photoisomerization of trans-stilbene has been investigated in an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate([bmim]PF6). It has been found that the photo-isomerization indeed proceeds in this ionic liquid with a rate much larger than that expected from its polarity and shear viscosity.
