Abstract

We report on the morphological instabilities of the liquid-liquid interface in a liquid crystal at a nematic-smectic transition. Upon increasing the undercooling of the nematic phase, the following sequence of distinct structures was observed: dense branching fingers, dendrites, and dense branching fronts. We have determined the characteristic length scales and growth velocities of these patterns.
