A proposed classification system for ceramics

Abstract

Abstract A classification system is proposed which will permit an international standardization of ceramic data. This system will allow for adequate cross‐cultural comparisons of gross vessel morphology. An experiment was conducted which tested the reliability of the proposed system which had favourable results. A systematic relationship between actual total weight and the total capacity of the tested ceramics is presented. This relationship may allow researchers to estimate the total ceramic capacity of archaeological sites.
