Abstract Ease of manufacture, optical performance, ultra‐low power, high resolution over large areas and rugged image storage are all important display requirements for portable devices. Recent advances in the performance of Zenithal Bistable Nematic LCD are compared to these key requirements for application in hand‐held devices, smart cards and electronic readers.
