This lecture describes a comprehensive study of the reactions of unsaturated tluorocarbons with zero-valent complexes of nicket palladium and platinum. Many stable complexes L 2 M(AB), where A:B = CF 2 :CFX LX= F, Cl, CF 3 etc], (CF 3 )zC: 0 and (CF 3 )zC: NR [R = H or Me]. have been prepared, as well as five-membered ring complexes L 2 M A B A . The various factors which determine the nature of the products are discussed, and it is shown that several of the five-membered ring complexes are formed from the adducts ,---, L 2 M A B. The formation of azine meta] complexes from (CF 3 hCN 2 is also described. * More recent work (C. A. Tolman, W. C. Seideland D. H. Gerlach, Inorg. Chem. in press) has established that dissociation stops at n = 3. * Certain nicke] complexes also catalyse the formation of hexadienes by the coupling of ethylene and 1,3-butadiene 22 . f :1 co"~F, ..
