Evolution of water resource management: a Laurentian great lakes case study

Abstract

The evolution of water resource management in the Great Lakes Region is reconstructed using a case study of the Bay of Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Three different time periods or eras are identified. The significant events associated with these eras are discussed in the context of changing attitudes and approaches to water resource management. Changes in water quality over time are documented where possible. Comments on the future and a call for integrative management conclude the paper.
