The equations describing the temperature distributions produced in a target by a heat source whose radial intensity variation obeys the Gaussian distribution law are developed from the general heat flow equation. Thin foil and semi-infinite targets are considered for both stationary and moving heat sources and the energy of the source is assumed to be absorbed entirely in the surface plane of the target. No account is taken of any change of state of the target material.
