Abstract

During the past 10 years research on learning and problem solving in specific science domains has produced rich descriptive reports of the problem‐solving behaviour of students and professionals in those domains. From these reports have come prescriptions for modifying instructions to facilitate the development of students’ problem‐solving expertise. In this paper we describe research on problem solving in classical genetics that has been conducted at the University of Wisconsin‐Madison. In addition we describe some of the ways in which our research has directly influenced how we teach genetics.
