Abstract

800 MeV inclusive (p,p\ensuremath{'}) data, spanning the momentum range from that of the quasi-elastic peak to outgoing proton momenta of about $350\frac{\mathrm{MeV}}{c}$, are reported for the target nuclei $^{1}\mathrm{H}$,$^{2}\mathrm{H}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$. The data are consistent with simple ideas concerning quasi-free $\ensuremath{\pi}$ production, and an angle and momentum integration of $\frac{{d}^{2}\ensuremath{\sigma}}{d\ensuremath{\Omega}\mathrm{dp}}$ across the entire quasi-free region accounts for most of the p + nucleus total reaction cross section.[NUCLEAR REACTIONS (p,p\ensuremath{'}) on $^{1}\mathrm{H}$, $^{2}\mathrm{H}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$; ${E}_{p}=800$ MeV, ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{L}=5\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{-}30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$; measured $\frac{{d}^{2}\ensuremath{\sigma}}{d\ensuremath{\Omega}\mathrm{dp}}$ for quasi-elastic and quasi-free pion production.]
