Reactions pi /sup plus or minus / + p yields pi /sup plus or minus / + pi /sup +/ + n were studied at a n incident pion momentum of 1.75 Bev/c. The experimental apparatus and procedure are described in detail, and the measured and calculated data are presented and discussed. Evidence was found of a pion-pion interaction in the ( pi /sup +/- pi /sup -/) system, although the extrapolation method of analysis appeared to fail. No comparable resonance state was found for the ( pi /sup +/- pi /sup +/) system. Processes other than the one- pion exchange are indicated even at relatively low momentum transfers. (H.D.R.)
