• Argon laser energy was successfully applied through a portable, fiberoptic pars plana endophotocoagulation system to produce retinal lesions in three patients at the time of vitrectomy. This system has notable advantages over xenon endophotocoagulation primarily because of the advantageous nature of argon energy transmission through ocular tissues. This technique allows surgeons to rapidly apply safe, predictable burns to all areas of the fundus from a safe distance in the center of the vitreous cavity.
