Abstract

High school coaches rated 11 boys' varsity baseball teams ( n = 135) and 10 girls' varsity Softball teams ( n = 129) on 6-point scales adapted from Bronfenbrenner's Teacher Rating Scales and Tutko and Richard's Athletic Motivation Inventory. The best discriminators between leaders and nonleaders as defined by coaches' ratings were aspiration level, competitiveness, emotional expressiveness, daring, responsibility, acceptance, and dominance.
