Case of Rapidly Enlarging Dermatobrosarcoma Protuberans during Pregnancy Followed by Metastasis in the Absence of Local Recurrence

Abstract

Dermatobrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon tumor of the dermis that accounts for less than 0.1% of malignant tumors.1 DFSP has a high rate of local recurrence but rarely metastasizes. The tumor is locally aggressive, tending to exhibit tentacle-like spread both laterally and deeply, with invasion of the subcutaneous fat, fascia, muscle, and sometimes bone.1 DFSP metastasizes in only 5% of cases, the most common sites of spread being the regional lymph nodes and the lung.2 Metastasis is most often preceded by multiple recurrences.2 DFSP has also been noted to grow more rapidly during pregnancy.3
