Abstract

1. The effect of additional day length produced by artificial illumination during the winter months upon 100 species of green-house-grown (chiefly annual) plants is reported. 2. In practically all cases the experimental plants were taller, somewhat paler, less sturdy, and had a poorer root system than the controls. 3. The time from planting to blooming was shortened in 41 species, not greatly affected in 27 species, and lengthened in 12 species 4. Of the plants hastened in blooming by supplemental light, most are natives of the temperate zone while those which showed no response were largely tropical. A few perennials were brought into blossom during the first season.
