The so-called 'infinitesimal' strain tensor is shown to be a valid finite strain tensor for all symmetric deformations (which involve no rotation). Comparison with a similar result for the triangular matrix of the Voigt strain parameters shows that either description is valid for arbitrary six-parameter deformations of invariant algebraic form.
