Alternating polarity and Friedel oscillations

Abstract

A discussion of the law of alternating polarity originating in organic chemical reactions and the Friedel (1952) oscillations in metallic alloys is made. These are manifestations of the response of the system to a localised perturbation, leading to an oscillation period related to the density and not to atomic positions.
