Abstract

Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism may present as ankylosing spondylilis such as in the case we have described. Similar cases have been reported in the literature, suggesting more than coincidental relationship. Serum calcium and phosphorus determination are recommended in evaluating an individual with spondylitis who has atypical clinical or roentgenologic features as well as a spondylitis developing in the elderly. The relationship and possible mechanism of soft tissue calcification in the various hypoparathyroid states is discussed.
