A new method is presented to calculate the synchronizing and damping components of electrical torque developed in a synchronous machine with arbitrary complexity of machine and control configuration. The individual contributions of field, damper, and reluctance components are determined explicitly. The method is based on numerical analysis of system time responses using a least squares error criterion. The method is equally applicable to responses obtained from on-line measurements or system simulation.
