Thirteen strains, or clones, of oxidase positive, rodshaped bacteria from the human pharynx and a perimandibular abscess were identified as Neisseria elongata by comparison with the type strain of this species in conventional cultural and biochemical tests and in genetic transformation. The study establishes N. elongata as an entity of more than sporadic occurrence in pharyngeal cultures.
