The performance of TRISO‐coated high‐enriched uranium/ low‐enriched uranium fissile and ThO 2 fertile fuel particles was studied under simulated accident conditions at temperatures up to 2700°C. A total of 1663 fuel particles from eight irradiation capsules with burnups covering the range of design conditions was tested. The test data show very low failure fractions compared with predictions of previous models and provide the empirical basis for a single model for TRISO coating performance.
