Sponges retained after laparotomy are a serious diagnostic problem when they cannot be recognized on plain radiographs by radioopaque inserts. In these circumstances, computed tomography yields a highly suggestive whirl-like pattern, as shown by two case reports. © Lippincott-Raven Publishers.
